EDUA Group wanted to incorporate artificial intelligence into their service offering. Together with Revolgy, they created an AI-powered English language assessment tool using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. The tool delivers fast, accurate evaluations and engaging feedback through a chatbot.

A new way to assess language skills using AI

EDUA Group is the largest private educational company in the Czech Republic, focused on innovative language learning. As the top language agency in the area, they are always seeking new ways to improve their services and stay ahead. They wanted to use artificial intelligence to enhance their services but needed help turning their ideas into reality due to a lack of in-house AI expertise.

We aimed to develop an AI-driven language test that was more economical and engaging than other, more traditional methods. We designed a chatbot to interact with students, evaluate their language skills through natural conversation, and accurately group them according to their proficiency levels.

We started the project with a workshop to set goals and plan the scope. We then began designing and implementing the tool, experimenting with different solutions and logic, and tailoring them to EDUA’s specific needs.

Technology stack used

  • Google Cloud Run: A fully managed platform that enables running code directly on top of Google’s scalable infrastructure.
  • Vertex AI: A fully managed, unified AI development platform from Google Cloud for building and using generative AI.
  • Streamlit: An open-source Python framework for data scientists and AI/ML engineers to deliver interactive data applications.

The tool assesses the user’s language skills based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing a person’s language ability. It prompts the user to answer a set of questions and describes their language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners to C2 for those who have mastered a language.

The AI language assessment tool gives feedback by pointing out mistakes and praising good grammar and vocabulary. After each activity, it tells users their language level and highlights three strengths and three weaknesses for each task, helping to find areas for improvement. Finally, it provides an overall mark, making it easy to understand one’s language skills.

The test can evaluate a person’s language skills based on completing just three exercises.

Task 1 description Task 1 evaluation
Task 1 Look at the picture and write a short text about it. Description relevance.
3 key language strengths and weaknesses.
Overall language level.

Task 2 Describe your typical weekend 3 key language strengths and weaknesses.
Overall language level.

Task 3 This is the beginning of a story. Please finish it.
“I found an old map in my grandpa’s suitcase…”
3 key language strengths and weaknesses.
Overall language level.

Expanding to support more languages

The AI language test improved the efficiency of student assessments and made them faster and more engaging. Students love the interactive experience, and EDUA can now serve more clients without increasing costs.

“We’re really happy with how the AI tool from Revolgy has made our language assessments quicker, more efficient, and engaging for our students. It’s another win from our long-time partnership with Revolgy, helping us make language learning better.”

— Tomáš Smékal, CMO, Edua Group

Encouraged by the success of the English language test, EDUA and Revolgy have decided to expand the AI solution to support additional languages — German, Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, and Czech for foreigners. Two language schools in the EDUA Group portfolio, James Cook Languages (JCL) and Jipka, will be utilizing the app, with some customizations to the app for their specific needs.

The final step of the project was integrating the tool with EDUA’s website and Google Cloud Platform.

Benefits of AI integration

Incorporating AI into language assessment brought several key benefits. Firstly, the AI tool is more economical to build because it automates evaluations, reducing the need for manual grading. This automation allows EDUA to place students in the correct levels more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Secondly, the AI tool creates a more interactive learning experience, engaging students like a virtual tutor, which enhances retention and understanding. It’s also scalable, allowing EDUA to expand their services to more languages and students without additional costs.

Lastly, the tool’s flexibility allows for customization to meet the needs of different schools, improving service quality and making it a valuable asset in EDUA’s offerings.

Building on a solid foundation

The AI project wasn’t the first time EDUA Group teamed up with Revolgy. Several years ago, we worked together on a major digital transformation.

EDUA wanted to unify their IT systems and improve security. We helped them move to Google Cloud Platform and adopt Google Workspace and Chrome devices. This switch created a secure, centralized system that improved communication and collaboration across all their brands. Revolgy supported not only the technical side but also managed the change to make the transition easy for everyone. The technology made EDUA more efficient, reduced costs, and improved their educational services.

Conclusion

EDUA Group’s collaboration with Revolgy highlights the power of AI in language education. Together, we developed an AI-powered language test that makes assessments faster and more economical. The success with English has led to plans to expand the tool to include languages like German, Spanish, and French.

The tool helps EDUA serve more students without raising costs and makes learning more interactive. By customizing the app for its partner schools, EDUA is set to stay a leader in language education.
