Amazon Nova: AI models that understand videos, charts, and documents
At the 2024 AWS re:Invent conference, Amazon unveiled Amazon Nova, a groundbreaking family of foundation models (FMs) designed to process text, images, and videos. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy described these models as delivering “tremendous progress” over the past few months. Integrated with Amazon Bedrock, Amazon’s fully managed AI service, Nova is here to redefine the capabilities of generative AI.
What can Amazon Nova do?
Amazon claims that Amazon Nova models are among the fastest and least expensive to run in their class. They’re also designed with customization in mind. You can fine-tune the models with your own data to improve their accuracy and make them work better for your specific needs.
Nova’s power lies in its ability to both understand complex information and create dynamic content. Picture uploading a dense report and receiving a concise summary or asking the AI to interpret the events in a video and getting back a detailed breakdown. These applications are no longer hypothetical; they are the backbone of what Nova models can achieve.
The Nova lineup includes six models, each tailored for specific needs.
- Amazon Nova Micro: A text-based large language model (LLM).
- Amazon Nova Lite and Amazon Nova Pro: Multimodal models that process text, image, and video inputs.
- Amazon Nova Reel: A video generation model that creates short, high-quality videos.
- Amazon Nova Canvas: An image generation model for creative content creation.
- Amazon Nova Premier: A reasoning-focused model comparable to OpenAI’s GPT-4o, slated for release in early 2025.
Understanding and generating content
Nova is great at understanding complex data. For instance, Nova Pro can analyze a detailed financial report and produce a clear and concise summary, pulling out only the key points. When it comes to video, Nova Pro can interpret scenes, describe actions, and identify objects, like summarizing the important moments of a football game in an easy-to-follow way.
On the creative side, Nova models are equally impressive. Nova Canvas allows users to create stunning, studio-quality images from text prompts, while Nova Reel can generate six-second videos that include cinematic elements like camera zooms and pans. These tools unlock new possibilities for professionals in marketing, storytelling, and content creation.
What does the future hold for Amazon Nova?
Amazon has ambitious plans for Nova’s future. In 2025, the Nova family will grow with two groundbreaking models. The first, a speech-to-speech model, will combine voice recognition with natural-sounding speech generation, opening the door to more human-like interactions with AI.
The second, an “Any-to-Any” model, will bridge the gap between different media formats, allowing users to seamlessly generate content across text, image, audio, and video modalities.
Why should you care?
Amazon Nova has the potential to change the way we work, learn, and create. It promises to reduce hours of manual work — like combing through long reports or editing video footage — by letting Nova handle that instead.
For businesses, this means saving time and money by automating repetitive tasks, like sorting through documents or analyzing videos. For individual users, it means easier access to tools that can help you learn new things faster or turn your creative ideas into reality.
Nova isn’t just for tech experts; it’s designed to be flexible and useful for everyone, whether you’re running a company, teaching a class, or just trying to create something cool. And as the technology gets better, the ways we can use it will only keep growing.
