New features in Google Chat: voice transcription and video messages

Google Chat is rolling out two new features to make communication more flexible: voice transcription and video messaging. Both tools improve collaboration, especially for remote or hybrid teams, making it easier to stay connected.

Voice message transcription

When listening isn’t an option, Google Chat’s voice transcription feature converts voice messages into text, allowing users to quickly read messages instead of listening. In March, Google introduced the option of voice messages, and now it offers an option to view their transcription as well.

End users can send voice messages from mobile devices to direct messages, group chats, or spaces, and receive them on all platforms, including the web. The transcription can be viewed or hidden, it’s available as readable text based on your Google Account’s language settings.

Make communication visual with video messages

Voice transcription isn’t the only way Google Chat is improving communication. Users can now send video messages directly in chats. A record button in the message field opens a window where you can record, preview, and re-record videos before sending.

Video messages can be shared in DMs, group chats, and spaces, and recipients can react, quote, or reply just like any other message.

The videos are stored in the Media section for easy access. Currently, recording is only available on the web, though video messages can be viewed on all platforms.
